UP NISMED Director, Dr. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola, and Deputy Director for Research and Extension, Dr. Monalisa T. Sasing, together with Dr. Elenita N. Que of the UPD College of Education represent the Philippines in the 7th UNESCO UNITWIN International Conference on Quality Teacher Education conducted in Mahidol University Kanchanaburi Campus in Thailand on 6-7 July 2023. The conference is hosted by the Korea National University of Education(KNUE) and Mahidol University Kanchanaburi Campus (MUKA).
During the conference, Dr. Monterola shared the results of her study on the factors that influence STEM teachers’ growth mindset. In her study, Dr. Monterola used Orange, an open-source machine learning and data visualization tool in creating a model of teachers’ growth mindset.
Dr. Que also presented her study which attempted to create a new concept of teacher ICT capability that is applicable to remote rural areas. The study used the Koehler and Mishra’s Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework in identifying the kind of ICT capability that teachers from the geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA) must possess to ensure quality instruction even during a pandemic.
On the other hand, Dr. Sasing showcased UP NISMED’s STEM Education initiative that empower girls in STEM. The coding learning sessions consisted of eight synchronous learning sessions conducted via Zoom and seven asynchronous activities using the Google Classroom. It empowered selected senior high school girls by equipping them with the knowledge and skills in using the MIT App Inventor in create their own app that addresses a particular problem in their school community.
The conference served as a venue for sharing initiatives related to digital transformation in teacher education among the Southeast Asian countries with South Korea as the lead. Other participating countries from Southeast Asia include Indonesia, Vietnam, Lao PDR, and Thailand.
