Prof. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola officially assumed her second term as the Director of the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) effective 4 December 2024. The UP NISMED staff warmly welcomed her back as she takes on this leadership role for another term.
In her second term, Prof. Monterola is committed to further strengthen UP NISMED’s role in advancing STEM education to ensure that the Institute remains a key player in shaping the future of STEM education in the Philippines and the broader Asia-Pacific region. Her strategic focus is on reinforcing the Institute’s role in STEM education research, curriculum development, teacher training, and extension services.
Prof. Monterola presented her 9-point agenda, which she refers to as PAGSULONG, at a forum organized by the Search Committee for UP NISMED Director. This agenda sets the direction for her vision of UP NISMED during her second term as Director. Her key strategies, as elaborated in PAGSULONG, include strengthening the Institute’s core activities, enhancing its impact, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Central to this is the creation of a supportive and growth-oriented environment for the UP NISMED staff, prioritizing professional development, well-being, and collaboration with key stakeholders. In addition, her key strategies also focus on expanding the Institute’s impact through the continued innovation and refinement of its STEM programs and resources. It also gives importance on integrating cutting-edge tools and lean processes to streamline operations, increase efficiency, and improve service delivery across the Institute’s major functions. Moreover, a core element of her key strategies involves maximizing the potential of existing technologies and facilities, while remaining open to emerging innovations in STEM education. Prof. Monterola also aims to secure additional resources to support the Institute’s sustainability, competitiveness, and overall capacity to lead in STEM education and research.
