UP NISMED Conducts Digital Stories and Apps Training for Early Grade Science and Mathematics Teachers

To further its commitment to broaden access – including support for learners with visual impairments - the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) conducted the second iteration of its hands-on workshops to train early grade science and math teachers in integrating digital stories and mobile applications into their lessons.

The first session took place on January 24 at the Valenzuela City Academic Center for Excellence with the DepEd Schools Division Office of Valenzuela City. The second session followed on February 18 at the Gabaldon Building of the DepEd Schools Division Office of Angeles City. Over 100 teachers from both divisions took part in the training.

Dr. Monalisa T. Sasing, UP NISMED’s Deputy Director for Research and Extension, began each workshop by outlining the project’s goals, highlighting features designed for learners with visual impairments, and introducing the suite of digital stories, apps and daily lesson logs available on tablets donated by the People of Japan through UNICEF Philippines.

UP NISMED staff then facilitated sessions demonstrating ways to use digital tools in classroom instruction. Ms. Edna G. Callanta of the Elementary School Mathematics (ESM) Group demonstrated an app that guides students in identifying mathematical patterns. Ms. Beatrice Faye M. Mataac of the High School Physics group showcased “Where? Over There!” an app that brings basic motion concepts to life. Ms. Ronia Melecia R. Mosaso of the High School Biology Group presented a digital story on animal anatomy, and Ms. Dana M. Ong, ESM Group Chair shared the digital story “Ang Banderitas ni Kokoy,” which teaches pattern recognition through an engaging narrative.

Ms. Ronia Melecia R. Mosaso discusses the importance of using stories in teaching science with teachers from SDO Angeles City.

The digitization team, led by Mr. Renz G. Salas, Chair of the Audio Visual (AV) group, and including Mr. Ralph Ian M. Robles of the AV group, Ms. Monique Anne B. Tizon of the High School Earth Science Group, and Mr. John Alex M. Reyroso and Ms. Arabella Marie H. Pinpinio of the Information Science Group, configured the tablets and activated accessibility features throughout the workshops.

Mr. Ralph Robles explains to the participants how to navigate Easyreader.
