UP NISMED Trains Nueva Vizcaya Educators on PISA- and SEA-PLM-Aligned Assessments

The University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) conducted a three-day workshop on the development of assessment tools for the Department of Education Schools Division Office (SDO) of Nueva Vizcaya. Held on 29-31 January 2025, the training focused on designing assessment items and scoring guides modeled after the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM).

Twenty-eight instructional leaders from the division participated in the workshop, which aimed to enhance their capacity in creating well-designed assessment tasks and scoring guides for Science, Mathematics, and English at both elementary and secondary levels.

Parallel sessions were organized by subject area and grade level, which each group facilitated by UP NISMED staff. During these sessions, participants developed assessment items aligned with international benchmarks and grounded in national curriculum standards.

On the final day, participants presented their sample assessment tasks that applied, key concepts discussed from the workshops. Their presentations reflected efforts to integrate international benchmarks into classroom practices that are both standards-based and locally relevant.

The workshop concluded with a brief program that underscored the shared commitment of UP NISMED and SDO Nueva Vizcaya to improving learner outcomes through research-based and internationally aligned assessment strategies.

Participants work collaboratively to develop assessment tasks.
