UP NISMED Academic Staff Participate in Story Writing Workshop

The University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) conducted a story writing workshop titled “Incorporating Scientific and Mathematical Concepts in the Development of Stories for Young Learners” on 8 May 2023 at the NISMED Elementary School Science Laboratory. The workshop was facilitated virtually by Dr. Celeste Laurel-Tayzon, an Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Education University of the Philippines Open University.

Twenty-one NISMED academic staff participated in the workshop which aimed to review, critique, and explore ways on how to improve the digital stories developed by the NISMED staff. The first part of the workshop focused on the importance of integrating science and mathematics concepts into children’s stories. Various strategies for creating engaging narratives were also shared by Dr. Laurel-Tayzon. The session also included Socio-Emotional Learning and its competencies such as self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making and how these can be incorporated into the digital stories on science and mathematics.

Dr. Celeste Laurel-Tayzon discusses the five Socio-Emotional Learning competencies.

Prior to the workshop, the NISMED staff received feedback from Dr. Laurel-Tayzon who provided comments and suggestions on how to improve their respective stories. During the workshop itself, selected academic staff engaged in a self-critiquing session, examining the story writing strategies they used, and identifying areas for improvement.

The children’s digital stories are currently undergoing review, and illustrators are bringing the stories to life through images to enhance the storytelling experience. These stories will be first made available to students and teachers in the Schools Division Offices of Angeles City and Valenzuela City.

This project is being implemented in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund.
