UP NISMED Congratulates Three Administrative Staff on Their Retirement

Arnul M. Magdurulan celebrated his 65th birthday and retirement on 10 September 2023 in a small gathering of family, colleagues, and friends in Quezon City. Arnul joined the Institute in 1978 as laboratory attendant of the High School Biology Group and High School Earth/Environmental Science Group. His transfer to the Audiovisual Group was a ‘big leap’ since it opened doors for him to be nominated by the Japan International Cooperating Agency (JICA) for a counterpart training in Japan in connection with the National Learning Resource Center for Teacher Training (NLRCTT) project. Arnul completed his 2-month training on Video Equipment Maintenance Techniques and Video Program Production Techniques (Operation Course) in April 1990 at Sony Corporation International Training Center in Tokyo, Japan. In the same year, he was promoted to the Precision Instrument Technician II position with permanent status. Known for his sincerity in helping, Arnul was always the first person others turned to in times of need, offering his time and resources without expecting anything in return.

The honoree, Mr. Arnul M. Magdurulan (third from left), listens attentively as Mr. Eligio C. Obille Jr., former UP NISMED Deputy Director for Administration, reads the plaque citation honoring his 45 years of dedicated service to the Institute. Also present in the photo are Dr. Aida I. Yap, former UP NISMED Director; Ms. Ester A. Bautista, former UP NISMED staff; Ms. Cherry A. Velasco of the UP NISMED Library; and Mr. Renz G. Salas of the UP NISMED Audiovisual Group. Francisca “Kelly” C. Pio celebrated her 45 years of service to UP NISMED on 21 September 2023. Kelly started her work at the Institute’s Printing Section in Vidal Tan Hall.  When the new Science Teacher Training Center became fully operational in 1990, she was transferred to the UP NISMED Library, and later, to General Services. Fondly called Mamita by the staff who were close to her, she was always dressed in her best outfit of the day, spreading good vibes all around with grace and style. With the members of the General Services Section and other invited staff in attendance, a simple birthday-retirement party was held in Kelly’s honor at the UP NISMED Conference Room.

Four months later, Joel C. Tuboro of the Maintenance and Equipment Development Section (MEDS) also celebrated his retirement after 41 years of service to UP NISMED. Joel’s first job at UP NISMED was at the Printing Section. He was transferred to the MEDS where assisting in the laboratories was one of his tasks. He was also involved in the improvisation of science and mathematics materials and teaching aids project and in the repair and maintenance of all UP NISMED facilities. In 2023, the MEDS staff received the Galing UPD Honor Award: Pagkilala sa Pinakamahusay na Pangkat for their team effort, hard work, and commitment to deliver services especially during the difficult situations brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Joel served as Head of the MEDS from 2019 until his retirement in 2024.
