UP NISMED Director and Staff Share Insights at Different Conferences

The University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) Director and staff made significant contributions in international and local academic forums by presenting their research and insights.

Dr. Allan M. Canonigo, Ms. Haidee P. Rosete, and Ms. Abigail B. Gonzales receive their Certificates of Recognition as paper presenters during the NOTED International Conference on Education.

During the NOTED International Conference on Education held at the Institute of Biology, College of Science, UP Diliman from 8 to 9 September 2023, High School Mathematics Group Chair, Dr. Allan M. Canonigo, together with Ms. Haidee P. Rosete and Ms. Abigail B. Gonzales presented their paper titled "A Framework for Transformative Mathematics Teaching and Learning: Empowerment through Self, Cognitive, and Social Empowerment." The paper outlined a strategic paradigm for mathematics education. Dr. Canonigo added depth to the discourse when he discussed his paper on "Exploring Transformative Teaching and Learning: Perceptions and Practices of Pre-Service Teachers in Fostering Empowerment, Inclusivity, and Critical Thinking." These were made possible through the generous funding provided by the UP Diliman Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development (OVCRD).

On the other hand, at the 14th International Conference on Lesson Study and the 4th International Conference on Learning Improvement hosted by Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik on 8 to 11 September 2023, Dr. Erlina R. Ronda, as a plenary speaker, presented her paper titled "Discourse-Oriented Lenses and Tools for Analyzing and Crafting Lessons." Her participation was funded by the UP Diliman REPS Development Fund.

(From left to right) Dr. Dennis L. Danipog, Ms. Haidee P. Rosete, and Ms. Jacqueline Rose M. Gutierrez (6th from left), join other participants in the research in progress session.

In addition, Dr. Dennis L. Danipog together with High School Chemistry Group Chair, Ms. Jacqueline Rose M. Gutierrez, and Ms. Haidee P. Rosete presented their research at the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA) Conference held on 28 August to 1 September 2023. The presentation focused on the "Development of Conceptual Framework for Assessing Critical Thinking Skills in STEM Education." To expand their reach, they also shared their research contributions at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) conference held on 24 to 25 October 2023. Their discussion centered on critical thinking in problem-solving and inquiry-based learning. This research was also supported by UPD OVCRD.

Dr. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola, Mr. Anthony Guiller E. Urbano, and Dr. Monalisa T. Sasing
receive their Certificates of Recognition as presenters during the panel discussion
on Future-Proofing STEM Education and Research through AI

Also in another conference, the National Conference on Research in Teacher Education (NCRTE) 2023, held at the UP Diliman College of Education on 26 to 28 October 2023,  UP NISMED Director, Dr. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola, Deputy Director for Research and Extension, Dr. Monalisa T. Sasing, and Mr. Anthony Guiller E. Urbano participated as panel discussants of the session on “Future-Proofing STEM Education and Research through AI Applications.” During the discussion, Dr. Monterola shared her research on teachers’ growth mindset which significantly and positively predicts student growth mindset. The study compared machine learning techniques, namely, gradient boosting, random forest, neural networks, with logistic regression, to determine the model that has the greatest precision in predicting teachers’ growth mindset and identified the most important variables that influence it. Dr. Sasing on the other hand, discussed coding as one of the essential skills of the future and shared the learning sessions on Invent an App organized by UP NISMED which was designed to equip and empower female students in developing mobile applications that incorporate AI-tools using block-based coding. Mr. Urbano then discussed another initiative of the Institute that used emerging technologies which can utilize AI tools to enhance the teaching and learning of selected concepts in geology, meteorology, and astronomy. Moreover, Dr. Canonigo shared his insights in another presentation titled, "Unveiling Power Dynamics in Mathematics Classrooms: Promoting Resilience, Collaboration, and Inclusivity," while Ms. Gonzales shared her research on "Exploring Alternative Methods of Developing Mathematical Thinking: The Characteristics and Breadth of Mathematical Thinking Application In Philippine-Based Citizen Science."

The series of impactful contributions concluded with another paper presentation of Dr. Canonigo during the 2nd International Conference on Education Studies organized by the Society for Strategic Education Studies and Tarlac State University held online on 23 to 24 November 2023. Dr. Canonigo’s paper titled "Fostering Teacher Leadership Through Online Lesson Study in Selected Philippine Schools," provided valuable insights into innovative teaching methodologies in response to the challenges posed by uncertain educational landscapes. The conference was organized with the theme, "Educational Leadership in Uncertain Times."
