UP NISMED Conducts Training on GeoGebra for the Division of Albay

Dr. Erlina R. Ronda discusses how to examine affordances of a GeoGebra-resourced lesson for teaching.

UP NISMED, through its High School Mathematics Group, recently concluded its online training on Designing and Analyzing GeoGebra-resourced Lessons for 20 teachers from the 14 schools of the DepEd Schools Division of Albay. The course consisted of six modules and was conducted in seven synchronous sessions. It was conducted every Tuesday and Friday from 20 May to 14 June 2022 with each session running for three and a half hours. The course equipped teacher-participants with skills to develop GeoGebra-resourced mathematical activities. It also trained them to conduct their lessons using the GeoGebra Classroom, a free virtual platform for teachers. It also introduced them to research-based frameworks for designing, analyzing, and assessing the mathematics that is made available to learn in the activities.

The training course was facilitated by Dr. Erlina R. Ronda and co-facilitated by Ms. Abigail B. Gonzales. It is the second course in the three-course training package for GeoGebra funded by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development of the University of the Philippines Diliman. The first course was about learning the basics of the GeoGebra application and was led by Mr. Guillermo P. Bautista and co-facilitated by Dr. Allan M. Canonigo and Dr. Ronda. The third course will cover lesson study as a form of practical inquiry on teaching and learning mathematics that makes use of the resources of GeoGebra. It is expected that after completing the third course, the teacher-participants will be able to use GeoGebra in their own classes. The third course will also enable teacher-participants to train other teachers on the use of this technology as tool for teaching mathematics, for developing teaching and learning materials, and as a learning management system.
