UP NISMED Develops Interactive Courseware in Elementary School Science

In cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), UP NISMED has successfully completed the project titled Development of an Interactive Courseware for Elementary School Science in January 2022.

The main aim of the project was to develop interactive science lessons for Grades 3 to 6 based on the Philippines’ Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum for K to 12 learners. The lessons were reviewed to assess their alignment to inquiry-based teaching and learning, concept development, and responsiveness to the frequently asked assessment items in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Teaching guides were written to accompany all the lessons.

Dr. Monalisa T. Sasing shares to the Elementary Science Courseware Development Team the feedback from users of the Interactive Mathematics Courseware for Grades 1 to 6, which may be useful in the development of the elementary science courseware.

The project started in the first quarter of 2021 and was carried out in four major phases. Topics were first identified, covering four content areas: Living Things and Their Environment; Matter; Force, Motion and Energy; and Earth and Space. The selection of the lessons to be included in the courseware was based on the frequency of inclusion in TIMSS and PISA. After extensive deliberation on the selection of topics, storyboards and content scripts were then developed and later peer reviewed, after which the teaching guides were written. All materials were then subjected to content and language review by experts in their respective fields. The revised versions went through another review before finalizing them for submission to DOST-SEI for digitization.
