Dr. Marlene Ferido of NISMED facilitated a 5-hour in-house seminar-workshop on the topic “Active Teaching and Learning Approaches in Science” on December 17, 2018. Twenty-two academic staff from both elementary and high school science and mathematics groups joined the activity with utmost enthusiasm. Among the topics discussed by Dr. Ferido are the inquiry-based pedagogical approaches she learned during the Enhancement STEM Teacher Training for Senior High Schools Programme at the University Leicester School of Education, UK in November, 2016. The seminar-workshop started with a discussion on inquiry-based learning and its essential features and proceeded with several sample activities for different science subjects that utilized pedagogical approaches such as active reading, active writing, small group discussions, and data handling. The session concluded with a short written reflection on what the participants learned from the workshop-seminar.
