UP NISMED Staff Publish Articles on Lesson Study

Ms. Sally B. Gutierez of the Elementary School Science Group published an article titled, Building a Classroom-Based Professional Learning Community through Lesson Study: Insights from Elementary School Science Teachers in the journal Professional Development in Education (Vol. 42 Iss 5, 2016). The article describes the adaptation and implementation of lesson study in a school in the Philippines. It describes how lesson study incorporates most of the features of a professional development model where teachers work with colleagues and experts to increase their opportunities to improve their instructional practices.

Mr. Allan M. Canonigo
Mr. Allan Canonigo of the High School Mathematics Group also published an article titled, Using a non-coercive process to engage mathematics teachers in lesson study in the International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies (Vol. 5 Iss 4, 2016). This article documents the experience of teachers who worked through a complete lesson study cycle with tenth grade Mathematics in the Philippines. Using the appreciative inquiry (AI) theoretical perspective, this study describes how the benefits of lesson study were achieved through deepened and a more collegial relationship among teachers in the school.
