UP NISMED conducted Project HOTS (Hands-on Teaching and Learning of Science through Inquiry), a professional development program of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) designed to help Grade 4 science teachers of the Division of Taguig City and Pateros develop inquiry-based science activities and lessons. Project HOTS consists of two phases. Phase I of the program was participated by 114 teachers at the 21st Century Classroom of DOST-SEI.
Participants interact with the Life Science facilitator, Ms. Ma. Dulcelina Sebastian, as they develop an inquiry- based lesson in Science. |
Phase I, which ran in four batches (Batch 1: 12-14 April 2016; Batch 2: 26-28 April 2016; Batch 3: 4-6 May 2016; Batch 4: 24-26 May 2016), is a three-day seminar-workshop on developing inquiry-based activities and assessment for a science lesson. Phase II, which is the lesson study component of the program, is a school-based follow-through where the inquiry-based science lessons developed in Phase I will be implemented in two Grade 4 classes handled by the teacher-participants. The follow-through is scheduled to take place from August to November 2016.
Project HOTS was inspired by La main à la pâte, an initiative of the French Academy of Science to promote inquiry based science education.
