UP NISMED Director, Dr. Soledad A. Ulep, was invited as a panel member in the Thirteenth Japan Education Forum (JEF) which was held on 24 February 2016 in Tokyo, Japan. During the forum, Dr. Ulep presented a paper titled, “Providing Quality Education for All through Teacher Professional Development and Curriculum Development.” She cited two examples of Japan’s initiatives that have supported UP NISMED’s efforts to provide quality science and mathematics education in the Philippines. A past example was the JICA-funded Science and Mathematics Education Manpower Development Project (1994 - 1999) and a present example is the APEC Lesson Study Project (2006 - to present). Both projects involved teacher professional development and curriculum development.
The JEF is an annual event jointly organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology of Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the University of Tsukuba, and Hiroshima University that aims to serve as a platform for constructive discussion on new and innovative ways to promote international cooperation in this field. The forum this year has the theme, “Japan’s initiatives to achieve the goals of the Education for All and possible future direction of international education cooperation to achieve Education 2030 goals.”
