23 Nov 2011. It was a momentous gathering of former directors, alumni, and staff to celebrate NISMED’s 47th anniversary and honor its founder, Dr. Dolores F. Hernandez.
The day started with a thanksgiving mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Michael James I. Ty of the UP Parish of the Holy Sacrifice. This was followed by the blessing of the Dolores F. Hernandez memorabilia, “An inspiration… Her legacy….” Family members of Dr. Hernandez, Evelyn H. Concepcion and Ingrid M. Hernandez, representing Atty. Eduardo F. Hernandez, opened the exhibit. Located inside NISMED’s Library, the permanent exhibit highlights Dr. Hernandez’s trailblazing efforts to upgrade science and mathematics education in the country.
Conceptualized by the exhibit team Maria Laura V. Ginoy, Ramoncito Rizaldo S. Saliva, Alvin J. Encarnacion, Arnul M. Magdurulan, Angelita L. Montes, Cherry A. Velasco, and Ester A. Bautista with the assistance of the NISMED Library and Maintenance Sections, the exhibit came to fruition after two years of research and planning. Close coordination with Dir. Gerard A. Lico and exhibit designer, Arch. Juliet J. del Valle, both of the UP Office of the Campus Architect was made. The Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Mathematics Education and Research, Inc. provided funds for the project.

The afternoon activities included the awarding of Certificates of Appreciation to 18 NISMED staff who rendered 15, 20, 25, and 40 years of service. The awardees were Ferdinand C. Damasco, Marlene B. Ferido, Teresita R. Mañalac, Cerilina M. Maramag, May R. Chavez, and Aida I. Yap, 15 years; Antonia H. Lopez, 20 years; Celia R. Balbin, Ronaldo P. Liwag, and Vicente V. Ompod, 25 years; Arturo V. Abaloyan, Alejandra P. Abaya, Renante M. Lunas, Lolita M. Mondigo, Erlinda A. Ostalle, Amelia E. Punzalan, and Rebecca C. Salayo, 35 years; and Narcisa P. Gandeza, 40 years. For the response, Gandeza delivered a poem she herself composed reminiscing her 40 years of service in NISMED.
An audiovisual montage of the awardees’ “Then and Now” photographs delighted the staff and group games capped the day’s activities.
