Dr. Erlina R. Ronda, chair of the High School Mathematics Group, has been conferred the Career Scientist I rank by the Scientific Career Council jointly headed by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The Scientific Career System recognizes the exemplary work of research personnel in government service by giving them a scientist rank, thereby creating a professional community of highly qualified and productive scientific personnel.
Dr. Ronda’s works give importance to theoretical tools in bridging research, curriculum design, and classroom practice in the field of mathematics education. Dr. Ronda also helped develop the Mathematics Discourse in Instruction (MDI) framework, a tool used to examine the quality of mathematics discourse in classroom instruction. She further extended the application of the framework to textbook analysis, curriculum development, and teachers’ self-reflections.
Dr. Ronda’s works also include collaborative professional development and positions Lesson Study as a platform for theory-informed inquiry. This explains how practices improve the quality of instruction while fostering teachers’ professional identity. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, Dr. Ronda explains how the teaching of mathematics is studied, designed, and enhanced.
