UP NISMED celebrates Christmas 2019

While waiting for the lantern parade to start, UP NISMED Director and staff pose for a souvenir photo
along University Avenue with the book-and-a-tree lantern at the back.

Pag-iilaw.
The traditional pag-iilaw or the switching on of all the Christmas lights in the campus on 29 November 2019 at a new site at the Carillon Plaza marked the beginning of the holiday celebrations in UP Diliman. “Pumailanlang,” which means to soar, was the year’s theme of the celebrations.

UP NISMED participated by simultaneously switching on not the traditional outdoor hanging Christmas lights but the lighting decoration laser projectors. The use of the projectors gave the building facade a new glittery display of Christmas lights in motion.

Christmas Party.
Led by the Socials Committee, the 2019 Christmas Party of UP NISMED was held on 13 December, 8:30 a.m. at the Auditorium. The party had the same theme as that of UP Diliman but coined as “NISMED Pumailanlang sa Pasko 2019.”

Fun-filled activities delighted all the attendees, which were composed of NISMED staff and their young children, on-the-job trainees, and the janitorial workforce. There were singing of Christmas carols, prize games, raffles, a headdress-befitting-the-Pumainlanlang-theme competition, and a UP NISMED “year-ender” video presentation. Special guest and former staff, Dr. Risa L. Reyes graced the occasion.

In the prize games, four groups competed in four rounds: 1) Cheering competition, 2) Paypay-Isda relay, 3) modified Bring-Me!, and 4) Gulat-Kumot guessing game. Group 4 a.k.a. PasFour Na Namang Muli! won first place in the overall games competition. In the headdress competition, the winners were Ms. Ma. Dulcelina Sebastian (“Kinareer” category), Mr. Ronaldo Liwag (“Para-paraan” category), and Ms. Cerilina Maramag (“Pumailanlang” category).

Ninety-three gifts were given away in the raffle. Among the lucky winners of big prizes were Mr. Roderick Gonzales (microwave oven), Ms. Deborah Anne Lumantas (baking oven), and Mr. Mario Gallardo (spin dryer).

In her Christmas message, UP NISMED Director Dr. Aida I. Yap personally thanked the staff for all their support to the Institute’s programs and projects. She mentioned, most especially, the one big blessing that the Institute has received in 2019—when UP NISMED was awarded the Gawad Tsanselor para sa Natatanging Programang Pang-Ekstensyon.

The Institute was also blessed by the return of two academic staff from study leave who have completed their doctoral degrees from universities overseas, those who newly joined the different academic and administrative groups, and those who got job promotions.

Dr. Yap also thanked the members of the regular, adhoc, and key committees who worked hand in hand to achieve their respective goals. She expressed hope that the same camaraderie will reign among the staff as she looked forward to another productive year in 2020.

The book-and-a-tree lantern

UP NISMED, UP CdE, and UPIS join lantern parade. The culminating event of the holiday celebrations in UP Diliman was the annual lantern parade. Tri-Unit UP College of Education (CEd), UP Integrated School (UPIS), and UP National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) converged along the University Avenue in the afternoon of 13 December to join other participants in the event.

The book-and-a-tree lantern which symbolizes education and freedom was the tri-unit’s interpretation of the year’s theme and the official entry to the UP Diliman Lantern Parade 2019.

Ms. Maria Laura V. Ginoy of the UP NISMED Art Section joined the UPIS, this year’s lead unit, and the UP CEd in the conceptualization and construction of the lantern. Members of the Maintenance and Equipment Development Section, Property Section, and Mr. Edwin Alix helped in the construction of the lantern.
