The University of Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) celebrated it 57th anniversary beginning with an online mass on 19 November 2021 officiated by Father Tito Caluag. The mass was attended by the current and former NISMED staff. It was followed by a short program for the awarding of Certificates of Loyalty to NISMED staff who have rendered 10, 25, and 35 years of service at the Institute.

The celebration continued on 23 November 2021, where two public lectures and a launching of UP NISMED’s resources were held. The public lecture featured two STEM education advocates who talked about the theme Siyensya at Matematika sa Panahon ng Pandemya, Paano Na? Dr. M.S. Vijay Kumar, the Associate Dean of Digital Learning and the Executive Director of the Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was the first lecturer. He discussed strategies for educational transformation towards a new landscape of STEM learning. The second public lecture was delivered by the Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Giovanni A. Tapang, who shared how the University of the Philippines Diliman responded during the pandemic and what its initiatives that helped out the community. Looking forward, Dr. Tapang recommended actions that should be done to prepare for the future should another disruption like the pandemic, hit the world again. This included forecasting to prepare for the future, building and retaining talent, and strengthening the physical and digital foundations. Following the public lecture was the launching of UP NISMED’s new resources. This included the NISMED TV, which is UP NISMED’s new resource site, the learning materials in Chemistry, and the third book on lesson study.

The event was conducted in Zoom and was streamed live in UP NISMED’s Facebook page as well as in the Facebook pages of KaSaMa Teachers Community and Go, Teacher Go!
