Go Teacher Go! Season 23 Explores Global Learning, Climate Action, and Everyday Science

In its 23rd season, UP NISMED’s educational radio program, Go Teacher Go!, aired from January to June 2024 on DZUP 1602 and livestreamed on Facebook. With ten episodes, the season spanned global opportunities, environmental advocacy, scientific and mathematical literacy, and even the chemistry behind common food hacks to bring science and mathematics closer to the everyday lives of teachers and learners.

The season opened with “Let’s Study in Japan!” where guests from the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) provided practical tips on applying for scholarships to encourage Filipino educators and students in pursuing advanced studies abroad. This global perspective was echoed in “STEM Beyond Borders,” where the NISMED TV team highlighted the role of digital platforms in expanding access to science and mathematics education beyond traditional classrooms.

Dr. Ivy P. Mejia of the High School Earth Science Group of UP NISMED discusses the results of Filipino students’ creative thinking in the Programme for International Student Assessment, 2022 during a GTG episode on the need to cultivate scientific literacy

In episodes reflecting on PISA 2022, Dr. P. Ivy Mejia and Dr. Allan M. Canonigo unpacked Filipino students’ proficiency in science and mathematics, emphasizing the need for deeper integration of science literacy and mathematical thinking in everyday teaching. These insights urged action from both teachers and other stakeholders. Furthermore, promoting scientific literacy as well as mathematical literacy were recurring themes. In an episode on misconceptions and misinformation, Ms. Deborah Anne L. Colades, Ms. Cerilina M. Maramag, and Ms. May R. Chavez stressed the importance of cultivating inquiry skills. Complementing this episode, “Chances Are!” by Mr. Aldrin Nazareno showed how teaching probability in elementary mathematics equips children to make wiser everyday decisions.

On the other hand, the episode on “Climate Compass: Navigating to a Sustainable Future” emphasized the urgency of climate action, with Ms. Monique Anne B. Tizon and Ms. Marion Ordillano connected sustainability to both lifestyle choices and classroom teaching. Similarly, “Are You Nature-Connected?” by Ms. Princes Raymunda G. Gatan explained how fostering stronger bonds with nature deepens environmental stewardship among learners.

Bringing science into the kitchen, “Pati-Chem” explored the chemistry of different food hacks from marinades to fruit ripening. This illustrated how everyday practices can become opportunities for critical thinking and scientific inquiry. The season closed with the episode on “Importance-Performance Analysis: Unveiling Teachers’ Perceptions on Science Process Skills,” where Ms. Maria Michelle V. Junio highlighted the need for the intentional integration of science process skills in the new MATATAG curriculum. As the program concluded another season, it reinforced its mission of equipping teachers with knowledge and innovative strategies to guide the Filipino learners.
