In his presentation entitled “Why do we need school anyway?” he stated that we need STEM education even with the current advantage of emerging technologies. He emphasized that students still need teachers for skill development, in fostering classroom relationships, and in showcasing creativity, especially in the field of STEM. He also discussed how to future-proof STEM education, which includes emphasizing the teaching, practice, and development of "soft skills" in students. These soft skills include creativity, communication, collaboration, and connection. He also said that even as we embrace modern technology, we should also be aware of its limits. Lastly, he explained how important it is for students to determine and learn about core skills and knowledge.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The next plenary presentation was given by Dr. Ethel Agnes Pascua-Valenzuela, the Advisor on the Future of Education of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Research and Development Platform at the ASEAN Secretariat. Dr. Pascua-Valenzuela’s talk entitled “Tech-Driven STEM Teaching and Learning in ASEAN” focused on the trends in STEM education and AI integration in the ASEAN region, the steps that each country in the region were taking in creating a New Future in STEM in the age of AI and digitalization, and the opportunities and challenges that go with the promotion of STEM teaching and learning that are tech-driven, all in the context of lifelong learning. She also tackled how we could make the STEM field inclusive and emphasized the need for increasing the number of STEM researchers, especially among women. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">NISMED Director Monterola gave the last plenary talk. She remarked on the topic of upskilling and reskilling through STEM, and NISMED’s role in it. She stated that developing digital competence skills provides a large economic benefit to a country. She also pointed out the importance of lifelong learning, about how participation in non-formal education should not decrease as we age, and on how connection between STEM and lifelong learning happens. She also talked about futures and sustainability actions, focusing on the interconnection of sustainable development goals and the shifts in the labor market for green jobs and skills. NISMED’s programs and initiatives with respect to each point were also presented. Lastly, Dr. Monterola emphasized that STEM should be about developing skills and tools for enquiring minds, employment, entrepreneurial mindset, and citizen empowerment.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">A question and answer session was held toward the end of the public lecture where participants in the auditorium and online asked about topics discussed during the plenary talks. The Q&A portion was facilitated by the public lecture host, Dr. Ivy Mejia, and the questions were addressed by a panel consisting of Dr. Monterola and Dr. Sasing, who delivered the closing remarks. Lucky guests were happy to receive STEM books in two giveaway draws held during the program. NISMED recently concluded its online course for 25 mathematics teachers and instructional leaders of the Schools Division Offices of Legazpi and Tabaco City titled “Math Talk Matters: How to Engage Learners in Mathematics Discourse” last 2, 4, 8, and 10 August 2023. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">To start the training, Dr. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola, UP NISMED Director, and Dr. Danilo E. Despi, SDO Legazpi City Schools Division Superintendent, gave their welcome messages to the attendees. Education Program Supervisors for Mathematics, Dr. Charles Asagra from SDO Legazpi City and Dr. Dioleta B. Borais from SDO Tabaco City were also present to introduce the participants. The trainer, Dr. Erlina R. Ronda, and the facilitator, Mr. Ralph Ian M. Robles, provided an overview of the training and led the opening program, respectively.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">In the synchronous sessions, Dr. Ronda emphasized that mathematics is a specialized type of discourse with distinct components such as learning objects, representations and symbols, keywords, routines, and rules. The distinction between everyday and scientific knowledge was also explained, underscoring the importance for teachers to create opportunities for learners to actively engage in mathematical discourses. Dr. Ronda also stressed the importance of purposefully designing lessons, enabling teachers to cohesively weave all learning episodes to achieve the intended object of learning. The discussion also highlighted the Mathematics Discourse Framework, which offers a new perspective on how thinking and communicating mathematically can be integrated into the instructional process.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWRInxw3zy1RCSIDFr-30mQy0PN4zar0iLyWdDk9dVJquO_tgtzKJlf_7S6Fminv3aEDnvvl6k4cAvjsWmLj5QahW_n0evOMSnFeUa3TBbhjP0wMPKEURktuskKVXets3sFkJFRo-jnoJJRTg3jITnM8POacnwBlQV1IcZomrFCqc4AEMTZzumX-IO5D4/s844/training_legazpi.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="541" data-original-width="844" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWRInxw3zy1RCSIDFr-30mQy0PN4zar0iLyWdDk9dVJquO_tgtzKJlf_7S6Fminv3aEDnvvl6k4cAvjsWmLj5QahW_n0evOMSnFeUa3TBbhjP0wMPKEURktuskKVXets3sFkJFRo-jnoJJRTg3jITnM8POacnwBlQV1IcZomrFCqc4AEMTZzumX-IO5D4/w640-h410/training_legazpi.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>The participants are all smiles after the successful presentation of their lesson analysis using the MDL Framework.</i></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">As a final output, the participants were grouped and tasked to analyze a lesson transcript in terms of the quality of mathematics using the Mathematics Discourse Framework. All these webinars were streamed live on KTC’s FB page.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The webinar titled GeoGebra and Function Arts: Linking Mathematics, Art, and Technology which was held on 24 March 2023 underscores how mathematics teachers can use GeoGebra as a teaching tool. Mr. Guillermo Bautista of the High School Mathematics (HSM) Group of UP NISMED talked about how to use GeoGebra to encourage students' creativity and how graphs of mathematical functions can be used to create artwork.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Held on 21 April 2023, Dr. Allan Canonigo’s webinar titled Fostering Algebraic Thinking and Reasoning introduced the participants to the whole-brain approach used in mathematics instruction. This approach helps children develop their ability to think and reason algebraically. Also of the HSM Group, Dr. Canonigo covered a number of methods for teaching algebraic ideas using patterns, equations, functions, models, hands-on exercises, and real-world applications.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Recently, generative AI has made headlines and it is beginning to shape the education landscape in novel ways. To respond to this recent development in education technology, UP NISMED Director Dr. Sheryl Lyn Monterola highlighted in the webinar titled Responsible Use of Generative AI in STEM Education generative AI's responsible application while ensuring that students are able to develop higher-order STEM thinking abilities. Dr. Monterola shared a list of generative AIs that could be incorporated into the STEM teaching-learning process such as ChatGPT, DALL-E 2, and Midjourney. </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaJaLyQTSqOh7shteu2rESBHRt-tkCZjAUEtm-wD-TVyYFZF4p8yiy7IX0R6lNm8nsc9XP_sV_ybkGBQekY4m-MiV3L-YAY-KVZ2k6yxCCvhcJ6DphqBzCusQbKHOG4lJ7cZ-mIaXsL368DGG3heQOfVT5nezyJDqolb5K_7G2uifoy6rOcK9iWRupjyw/s1238/Screenshot%202023-07-17%20170044.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="702" data-original-width="1238" height="362" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaJaLyQTSqOh7shteu2rESBHRt-tkCZjAUEtm-wD-TVyYFZF4p8yiy7IX0R6lNm8nsc9XP_sV_ybkGBQekY4m-MiV3L-YAY-KVZ2k6yxCCvhcJ6DphqBzCusQbKHOG4lJ7cZ-mIaXsL368DGG3heQOfVT5nezyJDqolb5K_7G2uifoy6rOcK9iWRupjyw/w640-h362/Screenshot%202023-07-17%20170044.png" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; text-align: start;">Dr. Sherly Lyn C. The program provided specialized training in various STEM fields, including 3D printing, block-based coding, and space science technology.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The first part of the immersion program focused on 3D Printing and was supervised by Mr. Jobeth G. Martecio from the Information Science Group. During this part of the immersion program, the student interns learned to build 3D models using the online modeling program Tinkercad and operate Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printers to create physical copies of their designs. They successfully designed and printed 3D manipulatives related to science and mathematics topics such as fault systems and number sets. Additionally, they developed an instruction manual on operating an FDM model. The second part of the immersion program, centered on coding using the MIT App Inventor, a web-based visual programming platform that makes use of block-based coding. Under the guidance of Mr. John Alex M. Reyroso from the Information Science group, the student-interns learned how to use the built-in components and features of the MIT App Inventor to create various mobile applications. This course was facilitated by IRRI Education at the IRRI Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna from 6 – 10 February, 2023.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As the course aimed to provide the participants an understanding of gender and its importance in agriculture and rice research for development and extension, IRRI invited participants from the DA, Philippine Rice Institute (PhilRice), and state universities. A total of 23 participants from all over the country were invited to participate in the course. One of the highlights of the course was the relevance of gender mainstreaming in research, technology development, and extension. It also tackled possible avenues that contribute to the development of gender-sensitive projects/programs. The course included field visits which added to the rich learning experiences of the participants.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmZE3EMG8LBDPTGNqe3iW0iogN_Y-ufs6poAeZ2NxdVlO9TZQjpvKCuMQ6u1QOmPYhA44oQhPMA5f6GZnRaRfONyys6K77hPCpmkK_WLxSznGZ7oCsO8Jic1y88EIQ7dQOtrYbUaAEfhyQG5jVFOyAXOAMVm_g8uuTP2-Sgfx2hc85c0M2R0y1af_v/s800/irri_education.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="483" data-original-width="800" height="386" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmZE3EMG8LBDPTGNqe3iW0iogN_Y-ufs6poAeZ2NxdVlO9TZQjpvKCuMQ6u1QOmPYhA44oQhPMA5f6GZnRaRfONyys6K77hPCpmkK_WLxSznGZ7oCsO8Jic1y88EIQ7dQOtrYbUaAEfhyQG5jVFOyAXOAMVm_g8uuTP2-Sgfx2hc85c0M2R0y1af_v/w640-h386/irri_education.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span face=""Calibri",sans-serif" style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 14.2667px; mso-ansi-language: EN-PH; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Ms Junio (9th from the right) with her co-participants as they visit the International Rice Genebank (Photo credit: IRRI Education, 2023).</span></i></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Moreover, the course provided an opportunity for participants to recognize some gender-related issues and identify ways of addressing these issues through the conceptualization and implementation of GAD-related research and extension programs. As a recommendation, Ms. Junio suggested the continuous active participation of staff in GAD programs and activities, not only in the University, but also in other organizations like in IRRI Education. By doing so, she hopes that this can contribute to the promotion and the development of the staff’s capacity as advocates of GAD in the workplace and ensure the sustained inclusion of gender mainstreaming in the Institute’s research and extension projects.</div>UP NISMEDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03136441314908358758noreply@blogger.com0
